HUGE DECISION

s0o0o0o0o0o Mark and I have been talking about the beginning of the rest of our lives together... Last night, we both started our applications to join the Peace Corps in May 2009. http://www.peacecorps.gov/ This will give us plenty of time to say goodbye to friends and family and leave for Africa or Asia or wherever in the world we are sent for 27 months.... Thoughts?????

If you do that I will be SO jealous!!!! I think that would be one of the coolest things in the world to do. Derek and I had actually discussed joining the peace corps before we found out we were pregnant. Now it's a plan for our retirement. lol. But seriously, I think that is probably one of the coolest things you can do, you'll get to see parts of the world that most of us will never experience, and it's an awesome, awesome, awesome way to spend your newlywed years. Do it, do it, do it! I'm so excited for you!!

As you requested, I have started researching some info on this for you....here is one person's post as he/she tried to make a decision about the Peace Corps:
Weighing my Peace Corp Pros and Cons
Derived from the limited information I have read on the internet.

Pro
Do some good in this world
Help develop personal skills and traits. Leadership, humility, life skills, language skills cultural understanding…
$6,000 cash upon return
Looks great on a resume
Might be the change I need in my life, to give me a stronger will to make more changes in my life in the future.
Cons
2 years 3 months commitment. If I joined and went in today I wouldn’t get back to my regular life until March 2010 at age 25.
$6,000 is not a lot of money, I make that in ~2 months
With my poor eating habits I would need to spend a lot of time adjusting to regular eating habits/meals before I even applied or I would become ill.
Can I really give up the rest of my early 20’s?
Can I walk away from my friends and family that abruptly, for that long?
It would be a scary decision to make, and I think that’s why I cannot make it right now.

It’s great that my student loans could be deferred that whole time but what about finding work when I get back.

Something a little shorter term might be a better idea for me.

So I am pretty sure the pros outweigh the cons here? ;) I'm not a picky eater and two years is NOT a long time.... Most people live eighty.... :) Love you all!
