I'm such a foreign student
I got home from Greece on Wednesday night. Thursday I had to print a tax return for my Advanced Tax class through ISU. Wow. It was quite a fiasco. First of all, I found out the only place I can print something is across the city at the Faculty of Medicine. Okay, that's not too bad. Then I had to get into the computer lab. They were gated off with those person counter things you see at Six Flags. It wouldn't let me in for some reason. I had to wait for two girls (who came in behind me) to go first to see how to even ENTER the computer lab. I had to scan my student ID to get in. I'm feeling like quite an idiot at this point. Then I find an empty computer and sign on with my Czech information. Then I try to print...Where did it go? I had no idea.. I went to the help center and looked for someone who spoke English. I had to activate my card, put money on it, and then go to the community printer to get my document. I activated it online, then got nervous and left the computer lab and went to the International Student Office to ask for help. Martin gave me some encouragement. I went to the library afterwards, to meet my friends. I had given up at that point and was just going to try to figure it out later that night when someone else was with me. I decided to see if I could print something at the library. I had to put money on the card (with the help of the Czech librarian). I printed the tax return two different times before I was successful. The reason for my success was directly related to the fact that the librarian was spoon-feeding me on how to do it. I felt like such a fool who couldn't complete such an easy task. It won't be hard now that I know how to do it, but it was quite an experience. I have a new appreciation for people who are new to a place. It is s0o0o0o difficult and uncomfortable. Lesson Learned... :)

Stories like this one really make me think about seeing foreign exchange students on campus, it makes me wonder how confused/helpless/stressed/nervous/lost they just may be! It's crazy to me how such a simple task can be so hard if you don't know how to do it or ask for help, wow, the things we take for granted...
