So on the last day in Athens, we took our time. Our flight didn't leave until 4 in the afternoon, so we left at noon from the hotel. The airport was an hour away and we could easily take a direct tram ride there....or so we thought..... We walked through the ghetto streets of Athens at noon with all of our luggage. We got to the tram station that was apparently going to take us directly to the airport. The down-escalators were shut down, so we carried our luggage down the stairs. We were almost to the bottom when a Greek Tram Naz...Official stopped us and (in Greek) told us to walk back up the stairs. We were tired and at this point just confused... So we walked all our luggage back up the stairs (both flights) ..The crazy guy followed us, realizing we had no idea what was going on. At the top, he spoke (little) English to us and informed us there was a three-hour tram worker strike that day. REALLY!??!?!? Three hours?!?!?!? Not sure if you know this, Greek Tram workers, but that is not how strikes are supposed to go!! You are supposed to give a freaking reason for your strike and tell people you aren't going to work until it is changed. Not let your boss know you are going on strike for 180 minutes because you are hungover from Festival! Sheesh! I got REALLY TICKED, to say the least. We thought we were doing great by being at the tram station FOUR HOURS before our flight, and we find out they didn't RUN for another THREE HOURS! At one point, I SLAMMED down my luggage and wanted to explode on someone. Then I realized it would have done no good whatsoever. They would have no idea what I was saying and I would just look like a FOOL! So we analyzed our options. Bus? Nope! They were on strike too...Taxi then! There were a lot of people waiting for the taxi where we were at, so we went about twenty flippin blocks to get away from the crowd and attempt to hail a cab. We ended up right in front of the Parliament building where the skirted soldiers had been earlier that week. Great... Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how terrible the walk was for me...Not only was I all kinds of cranky, my feet were soaked from the water all over the nasty ground (it was rainging), and the wheels on my luggage were gone...yep....I was LITERALLY dragging my luggage through the nasty streets of Athens...
So we get to the street and realize that there is a HUGE line of people waiting for a cab... At this point we are freaking out and near tears... (real ones this time...)... We find a cab on the side of the road who is on break. We convinced him to take us to the airport, after lots of begging. I know that we cut in line, but we were in dire need.... What would have cost us 6 euros each ended up costing us 10 euros a piece... plus lots of stress...We did make it to the airport on time, but thank God we left so early! Czech out my nasty feet! EWWW!!!
